Trace gas leak detectors use a trace gas, often helium or sulphur hexafluoride, which is introduced into the product. These gases have very small molecules and can leak from the smallest leak path in various components, subassemblies and systems.
The trace gas leak test can be highly sensitive and unlike the other leak detection techniques this method can be used when it is desirable to locate the leak source. It is therefore a good technique when the possibility to take remedial action to stop a leak exists, for example in final assembly testing of engines.
